There has been a bit of an argument on the DragonFruit adoptable I posted yesterday. It was insinuated that I copied the idea and image. I refuse to name names and point fingers. It has been insinuated and claimed that I coppy another artist here in the DA community with almost every new thing I try to come up with. It is getting to the point I feel I need to defend myself. Several pieces of art and ideas have been claimed to be copys. These include; Hero Cats, Living Art Ponies, My Ice cream kitties, the draon fruit and even the style I draw in!
The last piece shows off the style in question. Curves against hard edges, and a more realistic pony style.
I am at a point where I am almost being forced to justify myself. Hell I amd debating on just leaving DA and the pony fandom after this. It doesn't even seem like I can do anime. Good thing I like comic books!
Anyway Lets start at the begining. Hero Cats. I have been drawing these cats for 6 or 7 years now. I drew them based on a friend when I went to the Art Institute of Indianapolis. I haven't ever shown them off much here because they were always side doodles and what not. I reconnected with a friend of mine at Anime Crossroads. I drew Super Cat again and he loved it. Because I was bored I drew a slew of other Hero Cats, Spider cat being my favorite. I posted them. Thats it. Apparently the idea of kitties pretending to be superheroes is too much like kitties wearing cosplay. Go figure. I point you to Gamercat. An established webcomic with a cat constintly cosplaying/becoming the character they play in the video games such as Legend of Zelda and Assasin's Creed.
Living Art Ponies. My god! This is what started it all and devidid a friendship. Well apparently it was already disolved, but no one told me. Anyway I like to change the design for my pony messanger bags each year to keep a limited community of buyers interested in new product. The first year I did silohuette ponies, the next year I wanted something more detailed looking. I drew this little pic of Rainbow Dash.
I was playing with new brushes and an idea. The color was exploding off of her, like Living ART. I was running out of ideas for a new bag design and I got good feedback on it. I went with it. I was aware of the other person's designs and did my BEST to avoid similar poses and looks. Apparently I didn't do it well enough. Anyway as a curtosy to the other artist I removed links to these from my galleries. You can still find em if you search for em, but I hate taking art from people who have favorited them and genuinly like to look at em. The bags I still have? Not in my store online and while they do go to cons (only the ones the other artist is not at) as a clearence stock, the design will not be remade. Hell, we even switched the style of messanger bags.
Next we have Ice cream kitty design I'll be straightforward with this. I was doing an anime con for the first time. I had nothing really but pony stock. I wanted some original art to go with. I had this as my desktop for a LONG time.
Did it inspire me? Yes. Did I copy it? I don't think so. Did the bags sell well? Not really, but noone in artist alley did super well. Not like ponycon well. Will we carry the design again after we sell out? Depends on the next group of cons.
And now we arrive at the point of this journal! I woke up this morning to find an argument had broken out on my bidding thread for this little guy. Was it from the artist who I have had issues with? No, not the account I know of anyway. Judging by the content, I don't think so. The dragon it was being compared to WAS however from the artist. For all I know it was adopted and belonged to this person. Whatever, I don't care that much. Point is it comes back to this one artist in some form. So I now need to validate my inspiration for my DragonFruits.
I have the dragon print next to my bed in my room, with several others of his. I love em. I have been trying to bring money into the business for a while my offering commissions and opening an online store. I thought a successful adoptable, cutsie as hell like the SushiDogs, would maybe help. That was it folks. Nothing mor complex. I sketched out shapes that were reminicent of Strawberries and went from there.
Now to address my style. Do I bounce all over the place with how I draw? YES. Why do I do this? Because its how I learn and work. One of my favorite skills and talents is the ability to emulate just about any art style with some work. The whole sharp/curves thing. Well...honestly when inking in photoshop without the pen tool...it kind of happens. I use a series of streight lines intersecting because photoshop sucks for inking. I sketch teh same way and it can often carry itself over. I am also a product of the 90's comic book era so sadly I can blame Rob Leifeld for that too. Its just a cumulation from years of exposure to different media. Why has it all rounded up and gone painterly recently? Simple...I discovered how to use Paint Tool Sai. End of story.
So yeah, that is my defense. If you know who I am reffering to, yay for you. Again, I do not believe in cyber bullying or harrasment, but I have to stand up for myself. I am very close to leaving the pony community and possably anime at this rate though. I can't take the constant comparrison and insinuation that I have no original ideas and everything I work hard for, for HOURS is a rip off of someone else.
I don't even follow this artist on any media including DA, FACEBOOK and whatever else.
So thanks for listining.
